In the old fields of Texas, the ability to connect two components in a system with a highly dependable and fast to install connection is essential. The use of hammer unions as a connection is an ideal option in these types of applications, and they are durable, rugged, and yet also very easy to install, even in tight or difficult locations.
The Hammer Union Design
All stainless steel hammer unions are designed the same way and can be used in mud tanks or other similar types of oil field applications across Texas. They are made up of three different components or parts. These include a male end, a female end, and the nut, which is the part that is hit with the hammer to complete the seal.
In most oil field applications, the male end of the union is connected to the upstream side of the connection. This is the end that contains the nut and as the interior threads. This design allows the male section to insert into the female side, with the external threads, and the nut is then tightened over these external threads to create the seal.
Specifics to Consider
The typical rating for most hammer unions is 150 psi for fluid pressures within the system. This more than exceeds the pressures found in the applications. There are also high pressure types of unions that are produced by various manufacturers, and they can be ordered from most of the top International Lonestar field suppliers in the state.
The different pressure ratings for the various hammer union options on the market dictate the type of material used in the manufacturing of the component. Higher pressure rating unions that are typically forged or cast steel, but there are also stainless steel unions on the market for extremely high pressure applications.
