When to Schedule Dental Work While Pregnant
* It is best to have any dental work performed during the second trimester. This is because fetal organ development happens during the first trimester, so any potential risk should be avoided.
* During the third trimester, it is too uncomfortable to spend a prolonged time lying on your back. It is also wise to avoid anything that could trigger premature labor.
Visit the dentist for these procedures:
* Cleanings and preventive exams are safe and recommended. Rising hormone levels can cause swelling and bleeding gums and trapped food. Preventing oral infections and gum disease is very important as there is a link between gum disease and premature births.
* Have cavities filled and crowns inspected for any necessary treatment in order to reduce the chances of any possible infection.
* Emergency work such as an extraction can be performed if necessary. A single diagnostic x-ray cannot harm a developing fetus, according to the American College of Radiology.
* For comfort while at the dentist, bring a pillow and headphones with some favorite music.
* Keep legs uncrossed while sitting in the dentist’s chair; this will help to maintain healthy circulation in the legs and reduce the chance of swelling.
* Talk to the dentist about using the safest anesthetic and the smallest amount necessary for comfort.
Optional dental procedures:
* Schedule any non-emergency dental work until the second trimester or wait until after delivery.
Postpone these procedures:
* Elective and cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening, should be postponed until after the baby is born.
* Postpone routine dental X-rays.
