Zinc Plating or Galvanizing – Which is Best?

by | Mar 3, 2016 | Metals

Zinc is one of the best materials you can use for coating metals. It is very durable and resistant to many kinds of corrosion. However, should you choose zinc plating or a galvanization process for your materials? Here is more about these two options to help you make an informed decision.

Zinc Galvanizing

The process of galvanization usually includes dipping parts (like roofing nails) in a hot solution containing both steel and zinc. The amount of coating may be varied according the process used. For example, some materials may only require a thin coating but parts exposed to the weather usually are given a thick coating.

Zinc galvanizing is usually used on iron or steel to give it much better anti corrosive properties. In addition, zinc adds greatly to corrosion resistance because it is a sacrificial anode. This means the zinc coating will be corroded before the metal it is protecting, even if the coating is scratched. However, it should be noted, zinc’s sacrificial anode properties work for both galvanizing and zinc plating.

Reasons to Choose Galvanization

 * Low cost
 * Easy to apply
 * Long life
 * Best used for thick coatings

Zinc Plating

In this process, zinc is applied with an electocoat method. There is no dipping in molten metal. Instead, zinc atoms are transferred to steel or iron by a process of electricity. This process can be done inexpensively and it is possible to provide a thin and yet very durable coating on the metal.

To transfer zinc atoms to another metal, zinc and another metal (like steel or aluminum) are placed in an electrolyte solution. Current is then passed through the solution and this creates an electric circuit, transferring tiny particles of zinc to the other metal.

Zinc plating can be used to provide a bright, shiny, and attractive finish. It is sometimes alloyed with other metals to provide superior corrosion resistance. For example, zinc nickel is a popular coating material for resisting corrosion and providing a degree of lubrication. This helps to lessen wear and tear on parts.

Which One is Best?

If you are trying to decide on whether to go with galvanized or zinc plating, it depends on your needs. When you need a thick zinc coating for maximum corrosion resistance, choose galvanized. If you need a thin coating with an attractive finish, zinc plating is best.

Why Choose Zinc?

Because zinc can greatly increase the corrosion resistance for iron and steel, it is a cost effective coating for many industries. Zinc is very durable and can help to lower maintenance costs also.
