Unless you have been living under a rock for the last fourteen and a half years, or younger than that, you are well aware of what happened on September 11, 2001. Two planes were flown directly into the two World Trade Center buildings resulting in nearly 3,000 people being killed. A memorial has been erected in their place that includes a museum. There are separate exhibits representing different aspects of the attack on that day, as well as the bombing on February 26, 1993.
Historical Exhibition
Part One of the Historical Exhibition has a timeline of the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. It includes first-person testimonials, video, artifacts, images and audio recordings in real-time. It depicts all the courageous acts performed by civilians and first responders.
Part Two is referred to as “Before 9/11.” It contains a model of the Twin Towers along with galleries chronicling up to the attacks. It addresses the 1993 bombing as well as the evolution of al-Qaeda.
Part Three is After 9/11 transcribing the nine month recovery period including the search for missing people in the rubble, acts of compassion and volunteer service, and the rebuilding effort at Ground Zero. There is an alcove that brings up the questions that have arisen from these attacks and how it fits into our history.
Memorial Exhibition
The second exhibit is the Memorial Exhibition. Photographs line an entire corridor of every person who perished in both attacks, totally almost 3,000 people. There are also touchscreen tables to learn more about each person’s life that include more photographs and audio from friends and family. Additionally, an inner chamber offers profiles of individuals through a sequence of photos, audio recordings, and biographical material.
Foundation Hall
One retaining wall that remained standing from the original World Trade Center looms high as a testament to determination and survival. Alongside is the 36-feet high “Last Column,” with memorial inscriptions, missing posters, and mementos of loved ones who perished. It has only been removed once for a ceremony marking the end of the recovery effort.
It is a breathtaking sight to see; all of the carnage lay bare to absorb and reflect anew. If you are so inspired to live there after seeing the exhibit, go take a look at nearby luxury condos in NYC. They will show you how much the city has recovered from the attacks. Banded together as a group, they are not allowing terrorists factions to scare them into submission. We will never forget.
