The Parts of a Torque Converter
A torque converter allows a car’s engine to spin separate from the transmission system. In addition, it also helps shift the gears in an automatic vehicle. It is an important part to your automatic car as it cannot drive without one. The torque converter is made up of four main parts, which are described below.
The pump is attached to the shell of the torque converter. It is the crucial part of the whole converter. Without this part, the transmission may not work at all. It spins as it works and pressurized transmission fluid is incorporated in the spinning. This fluid lubricates and cools the car’s components.
If you take care of the pump above all else, you stand a good chance of not having any transmission issues plaguing you in the future.
The turbine receives the transmission fluid from the pump and makes the transmission move and rotate. This in turn, causes your car to move. The fluid enters from the outside part of the turbine and leaves from the center of the part.
The stator helps the efficiency of the torque converter. It is centered in the converter and pushes the fluid it receives from the turbine back to the pump.
The transmission fluid helps a car self shift in automatic cars. It oils and lubricates the transmission and its parts. In addition to conditioning, the fluid helps to cool the transmission and prevent overheating. There are many different types of transmission fluids. Depending on your vehicle make and model, choose the correct fluid to maintain top performance levels. You may never have to replace your transmission fluid, but most experts suggest you do so at least every 80,000 miles.
