One Major Reason To Choose Gluten Free Lotion

by | Apr 2, 2015 | Business

More and more these days, people are turning to alternatives to mass produced, synthetic products. While some opt for small, local companies, others prefer to purchase items that may be organic, free trade, and/or contain all natural ingredients. They choose these products for various reasons including environmental and health concerns. Currently, individuals are finding there is another option available for those who have health concerns over the use of gluten. There are now products that are organic, natural and gluten free. Lotion for your hands and other parts of your body is one such item.

Why Choose Gluten Free Lotion and Other Products?

According to statistics, the amount of people globally who have been diagnosed with Celiac disease, an auto-immune disorder resulting from eating, drinking or otherwise ingesting gluten, is only 1%. This is a very small percentage even, as it is argued by some, if this does not take into consideration those who have a reaction to gluten but are never diagnosed. Yet, daily people, particularly in North America, are choosing to go gluten free. The question is why?

Researchers argue that those who suffer from gluten intolerance including Celiac disease are affected only when they digest gluten. They state that the size of the proteins that comprise gluten are only effective and harmful when digested. They state that, in fact, using hand lotion, moisturizers and other topical products cannot cause reactions that are attributable to the presence of gluten in the product. As a result, they conclude that gluten free lotion and other such products is not required.

Yet, annually, more gluten free lotion, lip balm, shampoo and related items are becoming available. The demand is there and the marketplace is responding accordingly. For those who have concerns over gluten, the growing number of products that are now gluten free make it easier for their lives. It provides them with a choice among products and a variety. More importantly, it removes fear of accidental ingestion of a substance they may react to or do not trust.

This is what drives many people to use gluten free products. Even though they may place it on their hair, face or hands and not in their mouths, there is always a chance they might accidently ingest some of it. This can, after all, happen easily enough. With small children and even responsible adults, this can be an accident waiting to happen. It can occur as the result of a normal action.

If you place lotion on your hands to soften them, you do not generally wash them just before you eat – particularly if you just washed them and applied the lotion. It is possible the gluten proteins can be transferred from the lotion on your hands – since the molecules are too large to penetrate, to the item you are eating. The result can be a minor reaction to the gluten. The same transferal is also possible if you play with your hair, use toothpaste that contains gluten and apply lip balm or lipstick that contains gluten.

The Choice Is Yours

This is a plausible argument for the use of gluten free lotion and other products. While the chance may seem infinitesimal that the protein may makes its way into your body, it does exist. If you have Celiac disease or perhaps have a minor reaction to it, it would seem best to err on the side of caution.
