Mil-spec plastic media is plastic media which has been created by a media blast manufacturer and approved by the military to meet the standards of military specification MIL-P-85891(A). Within abrasive blasting, this refers to all abrasive media which can be used to strip, clean, roughen, smooth, and remove rust and other contaminants from surfaces. The purpose of abrasive blasting is often to prepare a part or surface for new layers of paint, or simply to clean them.

Mil-spec plastic media is regularly used in place of chemical stripping, as it is more efficient and easier to limit damage, additionally, plastic media can be reused many times, making it much more cost-effective.

What is mil-spec plastic media used for within the military?

Mil-spec plastic media can be used within all branches of the military, including the Air Force, Navy, Marines, Army, and Coast Guard for removing paint on wheels, brakes, engines—particularly useful in an engine overhaul—as well as paint removal in general on vehicles. The plastic abrasives used on aircraft are hard enough to be efficient, but delicate enough to be safely used on the aluminum body of the aircraft, the thin fiberglass components, and the thin metal of gauges.

Which plastic abrasives are used within the military?

There are several known plastic blast media products used within the military. T2 – urea is used for stripping and cleaning automobiles, marine vessels, trucks, and trailers. T3 – melamine is harder and, as such, used for faster stripping and cleaning purposes on many materials. T5 – acrylic is used for removing powder coating from pultruded aluminum parts, as well as other aircraft parts.
