If you have a number of missing teeth, or you are a candidate for traditional dentures, implant supported dentures in Chicago might be a better option. Here’s the basic process:
The Consultation
Before getting implant supported dentures, you must have a consultation with a qualified dentist. These dentists are specialized in implant dentistry and can examine your mouth and jaw. The dentist then decides if you are a candidate for the procedure. If so, and most people are, the dentist takes an impression of your mouth, which is then used to create the denture part of the implant supported a denture.
Before the Procedure
Putting in the implants is a minor surgical procedure. So, there are some pre-op instructions that you must follow. You might have medications to take, or you might have a restricted diet.
The Procedure
When you arrive at the office for your implants, the dentist usually removes all of the infected tissue and any remaining teeth. Once your gums and jaw are ready, the dentist places the fixture of the implants into the jaw. Most of the implant remains in the jaw, in fact, and only a small part, known as the abutment, remains above the gum line. Two implants are placed in the front of the jaw and two in the back of the jaw. Once the implants are in, the dentist thoroughly cleans the mouth again and then places the dentures.
Following the Procedure
After the procedure, the dentist gives you full instructions on how to care for your new implant supported dentures. You might get pain medications and antibiotics. Usually, within a week or two, another appointment is made. This allows the dentist to make sure everything is setting right. After that, you simply go back to your normal twice a year dental visits.
