How to Choose the Perfect ESL Program for You

by | Dec 16, 2015 | Business

As you plan on studying English, what should you look for in a program? Below is a list of things that will help you choose the best class out of all ESL programs available.

Identify Your Purpose
Are you looking to learn English so you can apply to a college in the United States? Perhaps you want to learn business English to further your international career or move to the United States and work. Maybe you want to learn English so that one day you will visit and explore an English-speaking country. Once you have a goal in mind, you can start looking at the different ESL programs and see if one fits your plans. Some programs are geared towards business and academic English, others are not.

The School Environment
Some ESL programs are offered in schools dedicated to English language instruction. Some are departments in larger schools offering several other subjects. The choice you make should offer you an environment that allows you to put your newly learned English skills in the school.

Course Curriculum
All ESL programs should offer instruction in speaking, writing, and reading English language. However, some programs place more focus on writing and reading, rather than speaking. If your interest is largely personal or professional you will definitely require a program with emphasis on speaking. Even if you are more interested in the academics, strong speaking skills will prove pivotal when you get to that English-speaking college.

Intended Destination
If you want to attend school in the United States, learn American English. Once in the United States, consider what city appeals to you most. Attending school in a large city offers you access to more professional job opportunities. Your decision on the city may even be based on the industry you are interested in. For example, San Francisco would be a smart choice if you are interested in the technology industry.

Quality of teachers
A few ESL programs hire inexperienced teachers who are not certified in offering English language instruction. Choose a program that has experienced teachers and offers ESL as a special subject, and not part of normal English grammar for people already familiar with the language. The school should also have national and international accreditation.

Activities Outside of Class
A crucial part of the school experience is the social life. As you learn English, the use of the language in real settings outside the classroom is critical. Look for ESL programs that provide plenty of group-organized activities outside class that include attending parties, art galleries, museums and shows.

As you sign up for one of ESL programs that meet the criterion above, take your enthusiasm, curiosity and courage to class. Remember, the best way to learn English is to practice.
