How Dental Insurance Works for Dental Implants

If you’re like many, you probably have dental, medical, and other types of insurance through your employer. However, you might not know what types of dental procedures are covered under your insurance and how much coverage is available. Unfortunately, most dental insurance companies won’t cover dental implants under your insurance policy.

Dental Implants Insurance Options

The reason that most insurance companies won’t cover the cost of dental implants is because there are oftentimes cheaper alternatives available, such as partial plates, bridges, and other options. In the insurance company’s mind, you could settle for one of the other less expensive options. They view dental implants as a cosmetic option.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you can’t get any type of coverage on your dental implants. Sometimes insurance companies will agree to pay up to a certain amount towards what a cheaper procedure would have cost, but that is up to the discretion of the insurance company. You’ll have to speak with your individual insurance company to see what their policies are. It’s always a good idea to know what your coverage options are and to ask your insurance company about any questions you have about just what’s covered by your policy.

In some cases, medical insurance might kick in to cover the cost of your dental implants since the procedure for getting the implants is a surgical one. However, in order for this to happen, the procedure usually has to be deemed as necessary and not a cosmetic option. Speak to your medical insurance provider if your dental insurance won’t kick in to see if they can help cover any of the cost of getting dental implants.
