Get Non Invasive Paternity Test Faster

by | Aug 18, 2014 | Technology And Science

The most common way of determining paternity is a gentle swab exam of both the child and alleged parent, which is also known as a non invasive paternity test. The samples are then examined for common DNA. The standard method is “a painless non-invasive procedure called a buccal (cheek) swab used to collect DNA samples,” according to The University of Nebraska Department of Pathology and Microbiology. They also note that testing can be done on “blood, fresh tissue, hair, bone and other unusual specimens” as the situation warrants.

When Situations Call for Faster Results

While the results of this type of testing comes back from the lab within two to five business days, there are situations that require faster results. In particular, there are some cases in which paternity needs to be established while the mother is still pregnant with the said child. These days, that is entirely possible. A non invasive paternity test can be performed even in the first trimester of the pregnancy. You don’t have to wait until the baby is born to find out who the biological father is anymore.

Recent Studies Show that Blood Samples During Pregnancy Can Determine Paternity

Now that we know fetal DNA can be found in a mother’s blood, it makes finding out the identity of the biological father possible at a much earlier time than ever before. The simple blood test has no negative effect on the mother and doesn’t even touch the fetus. It is completely harmless and can provide accurate results in the early stages of pregnancy.

A study published in Genetics in Medicine in Dec 2012 focused on a non-invasive way of performing a paternity test while the baby was still in gestation. Blood samples from the pregnant women involved in the study provided paternity results with 100 percent accuracy.

“A noninvasive prenatal paternity test based on cell-free fetal DNA present in maternal blood, performed at 8 weeks of gestation or later, could provide a safe option for determining paternity,” according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May, 2012. The study showed that a non invasive paternity test can be effective as early as eight weeks.

For Best Results

Unless you are in an emergency situation, it is best to wait until 14 weeks or later to have the blood test done. Some situations, like in the case of a rape, faster results may be necessary, but in general, it is best to wait a little longer for better results.

Getting an answer can take up to nine days and it is highly recommended to have men who are suspected of being the father to have a DNA test as well. Comparing the results against each other will provide an answer without any doubt.
