Cosmetic dentistry is a branch of dentistry that is concerned primarily with the cosmetic appearance of your teeth. Cosmetic dentists are not concerned with any tooth-related problems, such as bleeding gums, etc. Their main job is to improve the appearance of your teeth.
In case you have crooked teeth, the cosmetic dentist will use different techniques to shape them back. Previously, dentistry was all about the removal of teeth and filling of oral cavities. However, with the passage of time, many new branches of dentistry have come up.
What Are Cosmetic Treatments?
Cosmetic dentistry is mainly concerned with the application of different cosmetic treatments. The treatment may include crowns, fillings, dental implants, bridges, veneers and whitening techniques in order to improve the appearance of your teeth. The main job of a cosmetic dentist is to not only straighten your teeth, but also to lighten their color and repair the tooth. Cosmetic dentists also use braces and dental surgery in order to reshape the teeth.
One of the most common treatments is a veneer. A veneer is basically a very thin piece of porcelain that is created to fit over the top part of your teeth. The veneer covers the surface of your tooth, improving its physical appearance. Many people suffer from discolored and yellowed teeth. Applying a veneer on the top surface of your tooth can repair cracks and minor chips in the tooth, thus improving its appearance.
In order to make a veneer, a very small amount of enamel is removed from the tooth. The thickness of the veneer and the enamel is relatively the same. A sample of the tooth is taken, which is sent by the team to the dental technicians. The veneer is then made in a special laboratory. The dentist uses a specialized bonding process in order to bond the veneer to the tooth, making it look more natural.
CEREC Restorations
Another very popular component of cosmetic dentistry is the use of CEREC restoration processes. The CEREC machine is used to create ceramic restorations in order to fill the teeth and repair any cracks. CEREC restoration is a relatively new branch of dental cosmetics and has become hugely popular.
If a dentist has a CEREC machine, they don’t have to create a visual representation of the tooth and send it all the way to a dental laboratory. Instead, a three-dimensional picture can be created of the tooth with the help of the machine. The 3D picture is then fed into the milling unit of the machine. The dentist will place a block of ceramic in the Milling Unit and create a ceramic veneer or bridge for your tooth.
