Choosing the Right SMPS Inductor

SMPS or switched mode power supplies are commonly used today for DC to DC power and DC to AC power conversions. Regulating voltage is essential for a number of electronic systems these days and the SMPS inductor creates a more efficient operation. However, how do you choose the right one for your needs? Here are some helpful tips to make the process easier.

The Important Role of the SMPS Inductor

An inductor is essential for maintaining constant current within a given circuit. The current flow cannot change and this keeps the current from completely stopping when the “on/off” switch is open. It is similar to capacitance.

Selecting Cores

The SMPS Inductor can have one of several types of core materials. Cores can either be shielded or unshielded. If you need a high amount of peak current before saturation, go with an unshielded core. If electromagnetic interference is not much of an issue, the unshielded core is a good choice because it is the least expensive option.

Do you need high frequency components? Is noise an important issue to consider? You should go with a shielded core SMPS inductor. The range of inductance is significant. However, it is the more expensive option.

Toroid Selection

A toroid inductor can be used but there are specific limitations. For example, by design they take up a great deal of space and can be considered too bulky for some applications. However, they do provide low noise and this can be an important consideration. In addition, it is a cost effective option.

Wound Wire

This configuration is somewhat larger than shielded drum core technology. However, it has greater capacity for carrying current, and does not have the limitations on frequency you will have with a toroid. Wire-wound is commonly used for mid range inductance and it is medium range in price.

Bead Inductor

Do you have low voltage with high electric current needs, along with high frequency switching? The bead inductor may be the best choice and it is commonly used in computer motherboard, power supplies.

Flat Coil

Flat coil type technology provides high current capabilities with minimal space and they present a very low profile. The benefits of flat coils are low noise and very little voltage drop. However, you will receive low inductance and they may not be the most cost effective option.

Planar

This is one of the most costly options. However, the offer very low inductance with the ability to carry extremely high current.

When you decide on which SMPS inductor is best for your needs, make sure to take size as well as inductance needs into consideration. Of course, cost is also a huge determining factor.
