Checklist for Choosing a Roofing Contractor for Your Home

by | Feb 24, 2014 | Home Improvement

Because your home is one of your biggest assets, the importance of selecting the right contractor for your home improvement and home repair needs is great.  One of the major home repairs for which homeowners recruit a professional contractor is a roof replacement.  With the average cost of a new roof ranging from ten to twenty thousand dollars, it is easy to see why selecting a roofing contractor for your roofing project is an important task.  To make sure you get a quality roof for a price that works for your budget, ask the following questions before you finalize plans with a roofing company.

Where does the company conduct business?
Find out if the roofing company you’re considering conducts business in an office that can be contacted or visited during normal business hours.  Beware of contractors who work out of their truck or won’t provide details about the location they are based out of.  There is something to be said for the peace of mind that comes with choosing a roofing contractor who operates in a brick and mortar location and isn’t conducting a fly by night operation.

Can the company provide references?
Seeing a list of homeowners who have done business with a roofing contractor in the past can go a long way to make you feel confident about your choice of roofer.  Take this a step further, however, and ask to contact a few of the company’s previous clients.  Hearing firsthand about another homeowner’s experience with a company can put your mind at ease and help you be sure that you are making the best choice for your home.

Is the company licensed and insured?
While not every state requires that a contractor be licensed, it is important to know if yours does, and to make sure the roofing contractor you are considering holds the appropriate licenses.  Similarly, request proof of insurance from your contractor and from any subcontractors used by the contractor you choose.

Have you run a background check?
In addition to checking references provided by the contracting company, a simple internet search can also reveal a great deal about the business you are considering.  Check the Better Business Bureau website to see a contractor’s rating, and spend some time looking the company up on online review sites such as Yelp.

ASAP Roofing & Contracting is a licensed and insured contracting business that holds certifications with organizations such as the National Roofing Contractors Association and Guildquality.
