Car Batteries: A Layman’s Guide

by | Apr 7, 2017 | Auto Repair

When your car needs a new battery, it helps to know some basics before you go somewhere like Joy Auto Parts for a new one. It also helps to understand a little about car batteries in general so that you can extend your battery’s life and help improve the performance of your car.

1. Lead-Acid or AGM? There are two basic types of car batteries: lead-acid batteries, which you are probably already familiar with, and Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries. Most older vehicles use lead-acid batteries. They are inexpensive and relatively low maintenance. Unless your car is very old, the acid-lead battery will not need its fluid replaced. The main drawback with lead-acid batteries is that they do not hold a charge for as long as an AGM battery. AGM batteries are much more expensive but they do present several advantages in addition to being standard in most newer vehicles.

2. What size? Car batteries are not, as you might expect, one size fits all. It is important to bring in your car’s make and model number when purchasing a new battery somewhere like Joy Auto Parts because the only way to ensure the right fit is to match the battery with your particular vehicle. Battery sizes are usually numbered, but their size also depends on whether it is top, side, or dual terminal.

3. Are you sure you need to replace it? If you think your battery is dead, it might be a good idea to get it tested before you fork over the money for a new one–not to mention the environmental cost of disposing of a perfectly good battery. Many places can test your battery.

4. Car battery brands. When you go to a place like Joy Auto Parts, you may be surprised to see how many different manufacturers make batteries for your car. The price will generally reflect the quality and performance of your battery but it is always best to inquire with staff.
