The Vita
An experienced photographer is one that has left their own comfort zone to work in other locations. Sure, plenty of fashion photographers had made the rounds in Paris and Milan but that is expected. Are there any “interesting” things that jump out at you on the vita. If you are looking for an interesting photographer take a look at their vita to see where they have been and consider what those interesting experiences have taught them.
The Portfolio
As important, if not more so, is the portfolio. The portfolio will be able to tell you if the photographers past work is in line with the image that you are hoping to create. The portfolio gives you a sneak peak of the photographer’s style and a visual description of the work that they have done in the past.
The Work Ethic
You want to interview the photographer to get a feel for their work ethic. Do they come across as a photographer that wants to serve your needs or more like they are doing you a favor? A strong work ethic is important when you are on a shoot. You want a photographer that is not going to run up the cost of the session by being late or unreliable.
