The history of Christian education in the U.S. is inextricably linked to events taking place in Europe during the early 1600s. Queen Elizabeth, I died in 1603 after a long reign; she was succeeded by her distant cousin, King James VI of Scotland. King James was the son of the exiled Catholic Mary, Queen of Scots, who was beheaded by the Protestant Queen Elizabeth after Queen Mary’s attempted revolt. James was raised as a Protestant; he attempted to enforce strict conformity to his own religious beliefs. His great interest in religion still lives today in the King James Bible.

Christian Education and the Founding of America

Although Catholics were most in danger in England at that time, Protestants whose beliefs differed from those of the king were also in jeopardy. The Pilgrims and Puritans were both Protestant, but not identical to their beliefs. However, both groups were persecuted in England, choosing to make the arduous voyage to the New World to escape religious persecution.

During the 1630s, the Puritans founded Christian schools. In 1636, Harvard University was established to prepare Puritan clergy for their ministries. Most American universities had Christian roots. However, in 1805, Harvard began to reverse its Christian heritage, becoming increasingly secular.

The Bible Institutes

Bible institutes arose as the answer to a need for Christian education. The first Bible Institute, now called Nyack College, was founded in 1883 to train foreign missionaries and evangelists. These early Bible institutes did not offer the same undergraduate degrees as mainstream universities.

Bible Colleges

During the 1900s, Bible institutes began to shift their focus and expand their educational missions. The importance of Christ-based education never wavered, but Bible colleges began to offer academically competitive undergraduate degrees. As public schools became increasingly secular during the 1950s, Christian parents demanded faith-based education, leading to the creation of many Christian schools. Visit here for more information.
